Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) lets you connect your own API keys from external providers directly to Voxcode. When you use a BYOK model, your provider processes and bills the request — Voxcode credits are not consumed. BYOK is available on the Premium plan.

Why use BYOK

  • No credit limits. Your usage is only constrained by your provider account’s rate limits and budget.
  • Access models outside Voxcode’s tier system. Any model available through your provider (including unreleased or custom models) can be used in Voxcode once you connect your key.
  • Use your existing provider budget. If you already have credits or a spending limit set up with a provider like OpenRouter, BYOK lets you put that budget to work inside Voxcode.
  • Predictable costs. You pay your provider at their published rates with no Voxcode markup.
BYOK usage is billed directly by your provider. Voxcode does not charge credits for BYOK requests, but your provider will charge your account based on their standard token pricing. Review your provider’s pricing before use.

How to set up BYOK

1

Upgrade to Premium

BYOK requires an active Premium subscription. Click your avatar → Manage SubscriptionGet Premium if you haven’t upgraded yet. See the plans overview for pricing.
2

Open Settings → API Keys

In Voxcode, open Settings from the navigation menu, then navigate to the API Keys section.
3

Enter your API key

Paste your API key for a supported provider (such as OpenRouter) into the corresponding field and save.
4

Select a BYOK model

Open the model picker in any conversation. BYOK-enabled models appear separately. Select the model you want to use — your key will be used automatically for all requests to that model.
Your API keys are encrypted at rest. Voxcode never logs or stores the raw key value after it is saved.

Supported providers

OpenRouter

Recommended. OpenRouter is a unified API gateway that gives you access to Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok, and many more models through a single key. This is the easiest way to get broad model coverage with BYOK.Get a key at openrouter.ai.

Other providers

Additional direct provider integrations may appear in Settings as Voxcode expands BYOK support. Check the API Keys settings page for the current list of supported providers.

For most users, Voxcode’s credit system is simpler to start with. BYOK is the better choice if you need higher volume, access to specific models not in Voxcode’s tiers, or prefer to consolidate AI spending under your own provider account.
